When the tapes were made available within EMI, it was felt that the performance was too imperfect to be released. More recently, the original session tapes were re-examined and it was discovered that the masters consisted mainly of the third day’s sessions. This release includes most of the first day’s sessions, when the orchestra and conductor were fresher and had a more spontaneous approach. Although there are a few examples of imprecise ensemble, Klemperer brings to the work a performance worthy of release and an important addition to Klemperer’s legacy.
