To pay tribute to him, EMI Classics offers a 13-box edition, to be released between October 2012 and May 2013, which brings together the essentials of his symphonic recordings, including several previously unreleased on CD (among his first recordings). A disciple of Gustav Mahler, conductor at the Strasbourg Opera and then in Berlin, Otto Klemperer created several works by Schönberg, Hindemith, Weill and conducted all the modern composers of his time. He left Germany in 1933 to flee the Nazi regime and settled in the United States where he took the direction of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. After the war, Klemperer devoted himself mainly to the Austrian and German repertoire. Returning to Europe, he settled in London where he signed a contract with Walter Legge for EMI, the label for which he would record exclusively until the end, mainly with the Philharmonia Orchestra. Already a legendary conductor at that time, Klemperer is the origin of mythical EMI recordings. He is universally regarded as one of the greatest conductors in history, alongside Karajan, Furtwängler, Böhm, Bernstein, Celibidache, Giulini, or Solti.
