Osmium, a ritualistic electro-mechanical ensemble, is a true supergroup comprising Academy Award-winning composer and instrumentalist Hildur Guðnadóttir, veteran engineer and producer James Ginzburg, Senyawa vocalist Rully Shabara, and Grammy Award-winning sound designer and producer Sam Slater. Blending burnt electro-acoustic soundscapes with dense, metallic drones, barbed rhythms, and biomechanical vocalizations, OSMIUM’s highly anticipated debut album does not attempt to chart a rigid future. Engrossed by questions of the relationship between humanity and technology, tradition and progression, the individual and the group, OSMIUM funnels its experience and expertise into a body of forward-thinking sonic interrogations that tackle preconceived notions of culture. And while genres are acknowledged—the album draws from folk, doom metal, 20th-century minimalism, industrial music, and extreme noise—it never feels as if they are firmly rooted in the landscape.
