During the 17th century, the viola da gamba enjoyed a certain success in Germany. While it is often associated with the violin in compositions where the two instruments converse, it also has its own repertoire. Johann Michael Nicolai, who spent most of his life in the service of the court of Stuttgart, left us several compositions intended for ensembles of two or three violas da gamba.
