Cantate, oeuvres symphoniques et musique de chambre

Description

Each book-CD in the “Portraits” collection is devoted to a French composer now forgotten and presents, by bringing together the talent of many artists, a varied musical panorama of his work. Torn between France and Germany following political upheavals, the Lorraine composer Théodore Gouvy was not recognized by either nation after his death. Yet his work is of major importance, drawing inspiration from Mendelssohn’s passionate style, magnified by the nobility of French academicism. A significant selection of works — most of them previously unreleased — is presented in a book-CD with multiple approaches: biography, excerpts from letters, as well as articles discussing the composer’s style and personality.
