Daphnis et Chloé is regarded as one of the most important masterpieces by Maurice Ravel and one of the best ballet music of the 20th century. This vast musical fresco with a spectacular finale is strikingly performed by Gustavo Gimeno and the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg. Stravinsky considered Daphnis et Chloé not only as "the best work of Ravel but also as one of the most beautiful products of French music." Composed for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, this "choreographic symphony" brings together an intoxicating blend of seductive harmonies. Three movements have become popular: the lush Lever du jour, the fairy-like Pantomime, and the thunderous Danse générale (Bacchanale). These are masterful orchestrations of his alluring piano miniatures. This album also includes the magnificent and enchanting Pavane pour une infante défunte and the perfectly orchestrated Une barque sur l’océan. This is Gustavo Gimeno's third recording with the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg for Pentatone, with the two previous albums featuring orchestral works by Bruckner and Shostakovich.
