Concertos pour violoncelle

Description

David Popper was one of the most important cellists of the 19th century, and he is remembered for the studies from his High School of Cello Playing. Popper was the first to perform chamber works by Brahms and championed Schumann's Cello Concerto very well. Each of the four concertos he composed shares a lyrical and romantic spirit: the joyful Concerto No. 1, a cheerful prelude, the most dramatic and virtuosic Concerto No. 2, and the melodic masterpiece Concerto No. 3 in a single movement. Concerto No. 2 was dedicated to his "great colleague" Alfredo Piatti and is recorded here in its version with piano. The Austrian cellist Martin Rummel is not only the last student of the legendary William Pleeth, but with nearly 50 albums to his credit, he is also one of the most remarkable cellists of his generation.
