Symphony no.1

Description

Rêves et Tempête. "I am Russian, Russian, Russian!" declared Tchaikovsky. And it is indeed the Russian winter, with its contemplative melancholy and picturesque exaltation, that inspired the First Symphony of a 26-year-old composer, whose lively finale features a true folk song. But Tchaikovsky was also a great cosmopolitan with rich and varied readings, as evidenced by the splendid "Symphonic Fantasy on Shakespeare's The Tempest" (1873), too rarely recorded, which was successfully performed at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1878.
