Showing musical talent from a young age, Gian-Carlo Menotti saw his vocation evolve with a forced exile to the USA at the age of 17. However, this provided him with the opportunity to begin serious musical studies and to meet people who would mark his entire life. Brilliant offers here two short works, composed in 1946 and 1947, in genres as different as drama and opera buffa, the second complementing the first for the New York performances. One will appreciate, in terms of the scores, plots that get to the point while allowing for the exploration of contrasting registers, all in a language that is directly accessible. In terms of interpretation, one will savor the commitment of a young, talented team, effectively dedicating themselves to the restitution of these little gems that will particularly please admirers of Britten, Bernstein, or R. Strauss. This proves that Menotti, once scorned by the avant-garde, retains his interest and relevance, as evidenced by the rediscovery he is experiencing on an increasing number of opera stages.
