Verdi: Inno delle nazioni; Quattro Pezzi Sacri

Description

Following the critically acclaimed album 'Verdi Choruses', Riccardo Chailly and the Orchestra of La Scala continue their quest for excellence with this new release, which pairs two great choral works by Verdi that are rarely recorded. The Hymn of the Nations (Inno delle nazioni) is performed by Decca's star tenor Freddie De Tommaso, the first tenor to record this work for the label since Pavarotti. Premiered in London in 1862, the Hymn incorporates "God Save the Queen", "La Marseillaise", and "Il Canto degli Italiani": the national anthems of Great Britain, France, and Italy. The Four Sacred Pieces, meanwhile, were published in 1898, shortly before Verdi's death. They depict themes promising peace and the hope of paradise.
