Ouvertures Suites

The orchestral suite, sometimes simply referred to as "overture" due to the significance of its first movement, enjoyed great popularity in the early 18th century, particularly in Central Germany. Bach discovered this genre during his youth and cultivated it until his late period in Leipzig. Here are 4 overture-suites, including the famous Suite No. 2 BWV 1067, which is part of his late works. Numerous copying errors in the original parts suggest that the work was originally written a tone lower – in A minor – and therefore probably for a different solo instrument than the transverse flute: in this recording, this first version, determined from the mentioned clues, is played with a solo oboe. "This is a work of austere beauty, in which contrapuntal skill and melancholic expression combine in a very original way with the clearly defined rhythms of the dances," writes Peter Wollny in the accompanying text for this recording.
