Men in Bop Digipack
Description
In the wake of bebop, hard bop brought the roots, blues and gospel, back into the spotlight. It is to this new golden age of jazz that our two tenor saxophonists Olivier Defays and Philippe Chagne devote themselves, while also reconnecting with another jazz institution, that of the « tenor battles ».Men in bop is the result of a long musical friendship between Olivier Defays and Philippe Chagne, both on tenor saxophone.
Tenor, alto, baritone and soprano saxophonist, Olivier Defays is currently part of the big bands of Michel Pastre, Dany Doriz, and Claude Tissendier's "Countissimo" ensemble. Influenced by Dexter Gordon, Stan Getz and Charlie Parker, the saxophonist returns at the head of his quartet « Men In Bop » which revisits the jazz of the 50s and 60s.
The same is true for this « Magic Rhythm Section » composed of Philippe Petit (double bass) and Yves Nahon (drums). The repertoire of this quartet takes up the famous recorded duels of the great tenor saxophone names (Johnny Griffin/Eddie Lockjaw Davis, Griffin/Dexter Gordon, Gordon/Wardell Gray, etc.) completed by a few rare gems drawn from the rich jazz repertoire of the 50s and 60s, in original arrangements.
Olivier Defays began in Blues Trottoir at the end of the 80s. He has always moved from song to jazz and vice versa. He has recorded and toured with Mambomania, Thomas Fersen, Art Mengo, Sanseverino.
He composes for image (feature films, TV movies, documentaries) and theater including «Fugueuses» with Line Renaud and Muriel Robin, «Pierre et Fils» with Pierre Richard and Pierre Palmade.
He plays in Dany Doriz's Big Band, Mizikopeî, the Laurent Mignard Duke Orchestra . Philippe Chagne began his career in the 80s with Europe1's great Podium. He then worked with Jean-Louis Chautemps, Roger Guérin, Claude Bolling, then Le Grand Orchestre du Splendid.
Philippe Chagne also performs with Nino Ferrer, Eric Lelann's sextet, Carl Schlosser's quintet, then the Paris Barcelona Swing Connection, Gérard Badini's big band, Orphéon Celesta, Patrick Artero's quintet, François Biensan's octet and with Ray Charles, Phil Woods, Johnny Griffin, Frank Wess, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Laurence Allison, Laurent Coq. He has also been part of the Laurent Mignard Duke Orchestra for more than ten years.
