Oliver James, hailing from Tennessee and a true icon of classic R&B, returns to Colemine with two new tracks gathered on an essential 45. The A-side, “1-2-3”, is his first new piece since 2022. This driving soul track, in the vein of Memphis and Stax, was co-written by Nick DeVan and Vincent John (Eraserhood Sound). After finalizing the instrumentation, they were stuck on the lyrics. That's when Oliver James was called in. He drew on his experience in church to find inspiration and write the lyrics that gave birth to this track. The B-side is the result of a collaboration with the raw funk band from Nashville, The Gripsweats. It is a heartfelt song whose lyrics are inspired by the compassion of James and DeVan. Carried by sumptuous string and brass arrangements, “Nothing Is Forever” offers a melancholic and poignant counterpoint to the A-side.
