Two-time JUNO Award winner Old Man Luedecke returns to the music world in 2024 with his new album "She Told Me Where to Go." Written at sea on a scallop fishing boat, it is a journey through the darkness and light of quarantine, grappling with the value of an artist at a time when music is consumed in 15-second increments. Produced by Afie Jurvanen (a.k.a. Bahamas) over two years, "She Told Me Where to Go" sees Luedecke abandon his banjo for exhilarating unknowns. "I was going to my neighbor's to get scallops for dinner," Chris Luedecke recounts. "Knowing that the live music world had slowed down, he asked me if I wanted a job on his boat." That's how Chris began to venture out to sea in the North Atlantic, not far from his home in Nova Scotia. He was stepping away from playing music. During downtime, Chris's family would tap their maples and hold sap boils all day over an open fire. Afie Jurvanen (Bahamas) would frequently come by. "What if you didn't play the banjo on your next record?" Afie suggested. Afie's question was rooted in the fact that he was a fan of Chris's songwriting, and perhaps the perceptions of the banjo had distracted him. "I was a banjo player, known for my old-time Appalachian sound, and Afie thought I should just write songs without the instrument in mind." It might have been easier to give up playing and stick to scallops, but being able to let go of the instrument that made him gave new life to Luedecke— to his songs and the album that emerged from it. The single "She Told Me Where to Go" features prominently in "Pacific Drive," which will be released on February 22 on PlayStation PS5.
