In the 16th century, in Italy, the motto “the roosters are singing” circulated, an expression that acknowledged the superiority of Franco-Flemish musicians serving the princes and churchmen of the peninsula as composers and performers of vocal polyphony. Josquin Desprez, whom Italian sources mention as “Giosquino,” was its emblem: outside France, he served Cardinal Ascanio Sforza in Milan and Rome (1484-1498), in the Sistine Chapel (1489-1495), and also in Ferrara.
