Placing itself under the sign of dark romanticism, the new record from the Novus Quartet brings together two major works from the repertoire. The four musicians of the very demanding Korean ensemble, whose musical playground is the romantic period, put their virtuosity at the service of the expression of the moving Lyric Suite by Berg and Death and the Maiden by Schubert. Each in their own way, these works proceed to a coding. Berg conceals his love in a game of correspondence between letter and note. Schubert sublimates the fear of death through a mise en abyme of a youthful lied titled Death and the Maiden, which transforms the latter into ultimate comfort. In this way, the mystery of the links between Eros and Thanatos is expressed even more powerfully than with words. For the intertwining of reminiscences - Schubert quoting himself and Berg paying homage to Zemlinsky's Lyric Symphony - weaves an irresistible and hallucinatory poetic discourse. More than love, it is perhaps madness that unites these two works in a record where the Novus Quartet showcases the extent of its talents in romantic music, even in the darkness.
