666.667 Club

Description

Here the band transforms its violent and cathartic rock into a more refined and denser musical substance. Forced to hold back his voice, Bertrand Cantat changed the way he sings: he moved toward more guttural tones, naturally harsh so as not to have to bark out the words as he did before. The variations in his singing lead Noir Désir toward heavier, more stormy moods. Less showy, the Bordeaux band here masters acidic atmospheres and sonic threats, contains its rage and only explodes during rare guitar gallops of hardcore intransigence. "L'Homme pressé" perfectly illustrates this approach. After three minutes of extreme tension and sonic layering, only the final chorus unleashes the singer's full power. "Fin de siècle", "Septembre en attendant" or "A Ton étoile" follow the same principle.
