For their first collaborative project, DRIFT, bassist and producer Petter Eldh and drummer Noah Fürbringer (Moses Yoofee Trio) refine their mastery of sampling. Six self-referential tracks, drawing from their respective backgrounds, explore new horizons at the intersection of jazz, infectious hip-hop, frenetic dancefloor rhythms, and textured electronics. Each piece lasting less than three minutes, the album takes on the strength of a mixtape, condensing the masterful improvisations from their jazz experience into concise yet richly layered compositions. A project paying tribute to the culture of sampling would not be complete without a hip-hop collaboration, and few artists are more legendary than Talib Kweli from Black Star, who delivers a powerful freestyle on "DEEP NOTE." Named in homage to the foundational rap collective Mobb Deep, the track opens with a melancholic piano sample from Petter, which unfolds over Noah's syncopated ride cymbal rhythm, creating three minutes of groovy storytelling.
