Albums featuring a saxophone/bass/drums trio include some of the classics of post-bop. Sonny Rollins set the bar very high with A Night At The Village Vanguard in 1957. Albert Ayler went even further with Spiritual Unity seven years later. Gard Nilssen's trio plays in a style that celebrates tradition while seeking to revitalize it. The drummer/leader, bassist Petter Eldh, and saxophonist André Roligheten share, among other things, Rollins' love for melody and playful rhythms. They also share the ecstatic and wild fervor of Ayler. Roligheten also draws from the legacy of Roland Kirk by playing simultaneously on his tenor and soprano saxophones on two tracks. Additionally, other echoes of history can be heard.
