The Piano Day 2021 (29.03.2021) sees Nils Frahm surprising the whole world with a surprise album on Erased Tapes.
Graz is actually the first studio album he recorded for the label in 2009, and it has remained somewhat secret until today. Nils Frahm has quietly changed the musical landscape, reincarnating the age-old figure of the pianist-composer for a new generation of music fans.
The Piano Day was founded in 2015 with a team of like-minded friends to contribute to this process, releasing a piano album each year to celebrate one of humanity's greatest inventions. Graz is part of this; it is an unprecedented snapshot of the young Nils recorded at Mumuth, the University of Music and Performing Arts in 2009, as part of the thesis Conversations for Piano and Room produced by Thomas Geiger, which was published in the press and awarded in the "Classical Surround Recording" category at the 127th AES convention in New York.
Graz is a fragment from the beginning of Nils Frahm's quiet revolution. The genius is already evident; the harmonic language of classical music, and the immediacy of jazz. Nils seems to draw each idea out gently, so as not to scare the muse. He describes this album as follows: "sometimes when you hear a piano, you might think it’s a conversation between a woman and a man. At the same time, it can allude to forms of the universe and describe the aspect of a black hole. You can make sounds that have nothing to do with what we can measure."
