For the first time in his career, Harnoncourt conducts Beethoven's "Symphonies 4 and 5" at the head of his orchestra, the Concentus Musicus of Vienna. Founded in 1953, it is worth noting that it is a period-instrument ensemble that reproduces both in volume and timbre the sounds that were probably contemporary to the composer. It is today the oldest ensemble of this type. This recording is a 'live' performance that Nikolaus Harnoncourt conducted to a sold-out audience, of course, at the Musikverein in Vienna last year. Nikolaus Harnoncourt is now turning to Beethoven's "Symphonies" and wishes to dedicate himself to them in 2016, the year during which he will record numbers 7 and 8. It is unnecessary to remind how abundant Nikolaus Harnoncourt's discography is and how it almost always constitutes a captivating reference for the musical interpretation of our time. This disc, like many of his still recent recordings, will not fail to make headlines again.
