The first album without Tarja Turunen and featuring the new singer Anette Olzon, Dark Passion Play marks both the rebirth of the band and its choice of new artistic horizons, along with a massive promotional effort aimed at winning back fans' hearts and establishing a stronger presence in the global market. While Anette Olzon's voice does not have the same range as Tarja Turunen's, her powerful and sweet timbre brings a different quality to the band, which some critics say is closer to a kind of pop metal, yet capable of embracing complex and intricate harmonies, as indicated by tracks like the single "Bye Bye Beautiful."
