Nicole Glover recently received well-deserved recognition with the Artemis sextet and the Lincoln Center Orchestra. However, this tenor saxophonist is especially appreciated for her own albums where she faces a saxophone-bass-drums trio. Although this is not a common jazz format, this instrumentation has led to legendary recordings, starting with a 1945 Commodore record by Don Byas and Slam Stewart (whose foot tapping is referred to as "drumming"), and classics by Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson, and Ornette Coleman, to contemporary trios led by Branford Marsalis and Glover's label mate, JD Allen.
