Soo-Hyun Park was awarded the Edmond de Rothschild Group Prize in January 2012 at the Gstaad Music Summit. The prize offers the winner the opportunity to make their first record with an orchestra. Born in Seoul in 1989, Soo-Hyun Park began playing the violin at the age of seven. Since 1999, she has been attending master classes with Dora Schwarzberg at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna, where she also has the pleasure of teaching. Her highly virtuosic program includes Wieniawski's First Passionate Concerto and a work once championed by Jascha Heifetz, the Concerto by Julius Conus. Conus studied with Arensky and Taneiev. He was a good friend of Rachmaninoff since their student years, and until the United States, where both composers later lived. Conus's son married Rachmaninoff's daughter. His only major work is this showpiece for the violin, extremely eloquent and well-constructed. Vieuxtemps's Fantasia appassionata is a miniature concerto, with a passionate central movement and a diabolically difficult final Saltarelle. The composer was renowned for his technical skill, and this work gives some idea of the phenomenal technique he must have possessed.
