Tableaux d'une exposition - Chants et danses de la mort - Nurser
Description
It is difficult to follow Ravel in re-orchestrating Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. Admittedly, Stokowski produced a thoroughly convincing one, but the devil knows why, he omitted half a dozen numbers from the original score and made his usual untimely cuts. And now along comes Peter Breiner, who made a name for himself a few years ago by concocting a baroque version of the Beatles songs and then of those by Elvis Presley! A colorful character, who does not hesitate to play the provocateur to shake up a few coconut trees. And his version of Pictures shakes not just one coconut tree, but the whole island, in this case New Zealand, since he recorded it with the national orchestra of this (magnificent) country. Ravel’s version seems almost relegated to the chamber music repertoire.
