If only one record in the history of modern electronic music had to be kept, "Substances" would be it. In around twenty songs, New Order shows the way. From the early steps of punk-inspired electro-pop ("Everything Goes Green", "In A Lonely Place"), where traditional instruments follow the lead of metallic synthesizers, to the comfortable techno-house textures of the late 80s, New Order combines compositional rigor and defends the pop framework by adapting it to every sonic innovation. The highlight of this aesthetic demonstration is, of course, "Blue Monday", an unmatched track that, as early as 1983, brought the rhythmic innovations of Detroit's emerging techno into the pop garden.
