Disque La Raye 60's French West Indies Boo Boo Galoo
Description
On the track of prestigious clubs, at La Bananeraie in Martinique and at La Cocoteraie in Guadeloupe for example, musicians experiment with boogaloo in interpretations that are rarely very orthodox, and this is precisely what gives this compilation its uniqueness and flair. It incorporates influences from the African continent thanks to Rico Jazz (an adaptation of "Si Tu Bois Beaucoup" by the Congolese rumba orchestra O.K Jazz). We encounter the "Jerk Vidé" of David Martial, who has not yet turned into a cliché of the doudouist style. With the swagger of Guyanese Dany Play, and the exuberance of Joby Valente ("Disk La Rayé" featuring Camille Soprann' on saxophone), we (re)discover standards released half a century ago on the two historic labels in Guadeloupe: Aux Ondes by producer Raymond Célini, and Disque Debs, whose owner Henri Debs also shines on the mic with "Ou Pas Z'ami En Moins." In another genre, "Ou Que Di Moin" by Monsieur X is a pamphlet of créole funk, neither Latin nor festive, not strictly boogaloo. Because the Nuyorican rhythm was just a tiny part of what Caribbean orchestras played, easily integrating elements of biguine or Haitian compa. This compilation thus allows for small deviations, for pleasure, by embracing tracks where boogaloo is primarily an influence.
