La passion selon Saint Matthieu

Description

Orlandus Lassus was one of the greatest and most famous musicians of his time, and a teacher whose influence extended into the Baroque period and beyond. Although the Passion according to Saint Matthew is still associated with the immense masterpiece of Johann Sebastian Bach, early arrangements developed from plainchant to polyphonic form throughout the 16th century. Lassus composed four Passions, and this is the most accomplished one. His sublime polyphonic arrangements intertwine with the singing of a Passion rooted in the Roman Catholic tradition. Key moments in the history of the Passion are deeply highlighted in this recording through the introduction of motets and a spiritual madrigal.
