Heinrich Schütz - "Weihnachtshistorie" Heinrich Schütz’s (1585-1672) “Weihnachtshistorie” is one of the most famous works before Bach and is presented on this recording in its final, rarely heard version. The work, first performed in 1660 and published in a revised form in 1664, includes an introduction, nine recitatives, eight intermedii and a final chorus. Musica Fiata’s new recording presents the final version discovered at the Berlin Singakademie, which includes major revisions and new compositions that Schütz made shortly before his death to increase the emotional depth and musical sophistication of the work. The recording highlights Schütz’s masterful use of instruments to portray different characters and emotions, such as urgent recorders for the shepherds or solemn trombones for the high priests. The newly added and reconstructed sections have been carefully integrated to create an interpretation that comes close to Schütz’s original sonic ideal. In addition to the “Weihnachtshistorie,” the recording includes other major works by Schütz, such as the splendid “Magnificat” and motets from his 1648 collection “Geistliche Chormusik.” These works, recorded with exceptional precision and marked emotional intensity, show Schütz’s ability to express complex human emotions musically, while also reflecting the horrors of the Thirty Years’ War. The performance by the ensembles underscores the timeless relevance of Schütz’s music, inviting listeners to contemplate the profound spiritual and human themes addressed in his compositions.
