Sacred Bones is an independent label and publishing house based in Brooklyn, New York State. Founded more than 15 years ago in the basement of a record store, it has become a critically respected label, synonymous with avant-garde culture and music, and won the 2020 Libera Award for Label of the Year. With more than 300 releases to its name, the label has had the pleasure of working with legendary artists such as Mort Garson, Paj Smith, Trent Reznor and the late Genesis P-Orridge, as well as fostering the musical careers of filmmakers David Lynch, John Carpenter and Jim Jarmusch. It has also released career-defining albums by more recent artists such as Zola Jesus, SPELLLING, Molchat Doma, Marissa Nadler, Amen Dunes and Jenny Hval, while maintaining its underground character through small releases selected from the best punk and experimental artists. Their fifteenth anniversary as a label will be honored by several events and an exciting collection of vinyl reissues, but the jewel of this year’s celebration is the compilation Todo Muere, in which beloved artists from the catalog cover their favorite songs released by the label over the years. The compilation features innovative pairings, such as punk stalwarts Institute’s cover of art-pop sensation SPELLLING, and perfect encounters, such as Marissa Nadler’s beautifully strange cover of David Lynch’s already mysterious original, "Cold Wind Blowin". Some songs are twin interpretations with their own imaginative twist, like Constant Smiles’ cover of Jenny Hval, while others, like Zola Jesus’s song performed by Thou, Mizmor and Emma Ruth Rundle, take things into entirely different genres. And if each song on the compilation is a testament to the many songwriting and performing talents in the Sacred Bones catalog, the compilation as a whole was conceived as a cohesive whole deserving of a place of honor on any record shelf.
