About 150 kilometers inland from Lima lies the vast Peruvian jungle, an untamed land of impenetrable forests and winding rivers. In its isolated towns, cut off from the trends of the capital, a unique style of music began to develop, inspired by the sounds of the surrounding forests, the roar of the mighty Amazon and Ucayali rivers, and the distant rhythms of cumbia picked up on transistors. With the arrival of electricity, a new generation of young musicians started plugging in their guitars and trading their accordions for synthesizers: Amazonian cumbia was born. Driven by fast timbales rhythms, fueled by wiry guitar lines with corrosive highs, and sprinkled with bursts of organ, Amazonian cumbia was like a hyperactive distant cousin of surf music, mixed with a wild party in the heart of the jungle. While many of the best tracks in the genre are instrumental, and others are simple celebrations of life in the jungle, the goal of each song is to keep the party going. The radio stations in Lima were unaware of the new electric sounds emanating from the jungle, but a few producers ventured to the towns of Tarapoto, Moyobamba, and Pucallpa, attracting dozens of bands to the capital's recording studios to record their best tracks. While many became local hits, few were heard outside the Amazon region... until now. With eighteen tracks from some of the biggest names in the genre, Perú Selvatico is both the unlikely soundtrack of a party on a beach along the Amazon and a psychedelic safari into the mysteries of the Peruvian jungle.
