I Got Soul “Blaxploitation Mood” is the first Soul compilation from the Playoff Records label. Inspired by Blaxploitation films, the idea is to share tracks taken from these film soundtracks and other lesser-known ones that would have had their place on any movie soundtrack. The 70s followed the troubled period of the struggle for civil rights and against segregation. The African-American community was looking for new heroes, and music and cinema would bring it a few. Musically, we enter a pivotal period where vintage R&B sound is gradually replaced by more sophisticated productions (Johnnie Taylor, David Porter). Artistic creation is freed and diversified, as we can see on these 2 covers: producer Norman Whitfield modernizes with the Undisputed Truth a track by the British group Hot Chocolate, and the wah wah guitars of Creative Source take Bill Withers’ song into another dimension. Some, like godfather James Brown, would go on to explore other grooves, influencing “Sweet” Charles Sherrell or Sir Joe Quaterman with a square, dry drum kick that would become the essence of Funk. Millie Jackson carries on the emotion of the South with this deep and social lament. While the Jackson Sisters give birth to what some consider one of the pioneering tracks of the Disco scene. Willie Hutch and Bobby Womack remind us that a track can be groovy and melodic. Finally Curtis Mayfield and his influence as a producer with the Notations, as a songwriter with this very punchy cover by Sisters Love, or as a performer with his classic “Superfly” closes this selection. Enjoy!
