In 2006, Numero Group released *Good God! A Gospel Funk Hymnal*, a record that surprisingly featured gospel singers performing their hymns with an intensity, sultriness, and darkness usually associated with an old Mississippi bluesman. One might have seen this as a collision of the sacred and the profane, but it was clear that this music remained resolutely sacred. Four years later, Numero dedicates a new volume to this phenomenon with *Good God! Born Again Funk*. Not exactly a new testament, but rather a re-examination of American Black music in close-up. *Good God! Born Again Funk* lends a careful ear to the work of American composers and performers who were not afraid to express their devotion with inspiration and emotion, true to a spirit rather than a particular sound.
