The Birth Of Bop: The Savoy 10-Inch LP Collection

Description

Originally scheduled for release on 10/02 Founded in New York in 1942, the legendary jazz label Savoy Records produced some of the genre's most famous pioneers. On the occasion of the label's 80th anniversary, Craft Recordings celebrates this historic legacy by releasing the box set 'The Birth of Bop: The Savoy 10-Inch LP Collection', available in 2CD Digisleeve and 5LP box set formats. This anthology features visionary compositions by (among others) Charlie Parker, Dexter Gordon, Stan Getz, J.J. Johnson, Milt Jackson, and Leo Parker, anticipating the arrival of 'modern jazz' at a time when swing and big bands ruled the airwaves. The selection traces the evolution of the movement, from 'Romance Without Finance', Charlie Parker's first recording for Savoy Records in 1944, to Stan Getz's 'Stan's Mood'. Also included are Dexter Gordon's 'Long Tall Dexter', Fats Navarro's 'Hollerin’ And Screamin’ (Fatso)', and J.J. Johnson's 'Mad Be Bop', recorded in 1946 with Cecil Payne on alto saxophone, Bud Powell on piano, Leonard Gaskin on double bass, and Max Roach on drums.
