Il Spiritillo Brando by La Ritirata offers us the opportunity to know and appreciate a young and excellent Spanish ensemble, following them in their enthusiastic presentation of the music from the courts of Italy and Spain during the transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque. Since the first recordings by brothers José Miguel and Emilio Moreno for Glossa, no Spanish musician had been invited to join our team: this situation has changed with the arrival of Josetxu Obregón and La Ritirata, which includes some of the best young Spanish performers in the field of bowed and plucked string instruments, as well as winds or keyboards. The dance rhythms of Andrea Falconieri are the common thread of the album, which also includes works by Diego Ortiz and Bartolomé de Selma y Salaverde. This exciting music allows the soloists forming La Ritirata to demonstrate their virtuosity and commitment. Starting with Josetxu Obregón himself, who offers us on his cello works from the late 18th century by Giuseppe Maria Jacchini, Giovanni Battista Vitali, and Domenico Gabrielli. As indicated by its title, Il Spiritillo Brando evokes the court dance in Naples under the Spanish viceroyalty as well as the mischievous spirit wandering through the streets of Naples to justify the flaws of humans.
