Barclay is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year! Evidently, no French label better reflects the French spirit, its diversity, its refusal of conformism, its hybrid creativity, and its visionary strength than Barclay. Originally, Barclay was built on a love story: that of Eddie and Nicole Barclay. After founding their first jazz label, Blue Star, in 1945, the couple created the Barclay label in 1954, which would become home to lyricists as well as aspiring pop, rock, and variety artists.
Eddie Barclay sold his gem in 1983. All his successors proved worthy. This first volume brings together classic songs, chosen for their beauty and timelessness, through a mix of standards and more hidden gems from the great repertoires. Approximately half of the tracks are from the Eddie Barclay era, from the beginnings with Léo Ferré's iconic "C'est extra" to Jacques Brel's final recording in 1977, "Les Marquises." Also featured is a selection of artists who shaped the original Barclay (Dalida, Charles Aznavour, Jean Ferrat, Nicoletta, Nino Ferrer, Claude Nougaro, Michel Delpech, Eddy Mitchell) and those who, from Bernard Lavilliers to Philippe Katerine, Daniel Balavoine, Alain Bashung, Vanessa Paradis, Jeanne Cherhal, Renan Luce, or Stephan Eicher, perpetuated its high standards and noble impertinence. At the end of the program, to demonstrate the perpetual movement of creativity that characterizes the Barclay label, more recent residents (Carla Bruni, Calogero, Juliette, Marc Lavoine, Thomas Dutronc, and the young Marie Poulain) add their names to this astonishing genealogy. Two more volumes will follow next year, one dedicated to the broad spectrum of pop, the last to rock, rap, world music, and electro. Having passed away in 2005, Eddie Barclay would undoubtedly have contemplated this (provisional) overview with a smiling eye and a certain pride. Then he would have poured himself another glass.
