New Year's concert: The complete works - Neujahrskonzert: Die gesamten Werke - Extended Edition

Description

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the greatest media event in classical music, Sony Classical is releasing a complete edition of all the works ever performed at the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra’s New Year’s Concerts. Performed in the “Golden Hall” of the Musikverein between 1941 and 2020, all these works are being released for the first time in a single 26-CD box set. The great tradition began on New Year’s Day 1941. From radio broadcasts to television transmissions, the event was quickly embraced by audiences around the world. Since 1980, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra has invited the greatest conductors to join them in Vienna to usher in the new year. Whether Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Mariss Jansons, Franz Welser-Most, Gustavo Dudamel or most recently Andris Nelsons. These great names - all with a special flair for Viennese music - lead the Wiener Philharmoniker through 357 compositions tracing the musical dynasty founded by Joseph Lanner and Johann Strauss in the 1820s, then triumphantly continued by the Strauss sons. Among the other composers featured in these sets are Mozart, Schubert, Weber, Brahms, Berlioz, Suppé, Offenbach, Tchaikovsky, Verdi, Wagner, Richard Strauss, Beethoven, Czibulka, Lehar, Stolz and Waldteufel. One of the CDs also contains new recordings of eleven works that were performed only once during the early years of the New Year’s Concerts - and not recorded until now. A booklet included with this sublime collection contains an essay by Dr Clemens Hellsberg - longtime Philharmonic violinist, historian and former president - as well as unique images from the orchestra’s archives.
