No one knew what to make of the Jesus People. This informal youth movement, born in California in the late ’60s, brought together hippies, outsiders, pot smokers, and eccentrics converted to Christianity. But that did not mean they were going to fall in line. The Jesus People wore their hair long and kept their offbeat slang, extolling the joys of the “Jesus trip” and asking: “Have you tried everything? Why not try Jesus?” Wherever they went, from traditional West Coast churches to rural communities where back-to-the-land followers were founding communes, the Jesus People sowed confusion. The second volume in the Org Music and Aquarium Drunkard series, Jesus People Music, Volume 2: The Reckoning, bears witness to this strange era. Made up of eight tracks by eight different artists, this album is a collection of dreamy songs, somewhere between psychedelic folk and psychedelic blues.
