Description

This second volume of the Des Jeunes Gens Modernes compilation continues the contemporary pop-archaeology work undertaken in 2007/2008 – with the exhibition at the agnès b. gallery, the catalog, and the eponymous first compilation – focusing on the post-punk / cold & synth wave scene that shook the French underground around the 70s and 80s. This work was also extended in the meantime by an eponymous documentary, made based on interviews conducted as part of the preparation for the 2008 exhibition. For this new compilation, the work involved delving ever deeper into the vein of previous research, in order to unearth rare tracks – whose original pressings are now unavailable or sell for exorbitant prices at record conventions and on specialized sales sites – but also to extract from the creative crucible of the Frenchy (but chic!) 80s – which seems decidedly inexhaustible – period tracks that have remained completely unreleased to this day, and finally make them accessible to the public, more than thirty years after their creation for most of them. Thus, out of the thirteen tracks on the tracklist of this volume 2, six are completely unreleased. From a musical standpoint, the selection of tracks in this volume 2 aims to be less generalist and eclectic than that of the first compilation. This time, the objective is no longer to represent the creative diversity of the era in the most representative way possible from a stylistic point of view, but rather to follow a more subjective inclination, more focused on a current that could be described as electro pop / minimal synth that emerged within the French cold wave of those years, and whose echoes can still be perceived in many current productions.
