BOF JACKIE BROWN

Description

If every Quentin Tarantino film is an explosive cinematic event, each of his film soundtracks is the accompanying little bomb. "Jackie Brown", a film noir and a nod to blaxploitation, gives pride of place to 1970s American soul music, delving into lost corners of black music to unearth some unjustly ignored gems. The "Jackie Brown" soundtrack concisely and intelligently covers the soul-funk spectrum: from Bobby Womack's sublime "Across 110th Street" (the theme from the soundtrack of the film of the same name) to "Long Time Woman", a curiosity sung by Pam Grier, the film's star actress, from the soul of The Grass Roots to the sweet languor of The Delfonics, including Randy Crawford's highly underrated disco and Minnie Riperton's soaring voice. True to Tarantino's principles, this soundtrack, almost inseparable from the plot – it is also interspersed with key dialogues from the film – is volcanically rich and brings these unique, hidden gems to light. One can only be grateful to Tarantino for intelligently using his fame as a director to bring these treasures, which would otherwise be shamefully forgotten, to a wider audience.
