Volume 11 of “Next Generation Mozart Soloists” features Violin Concerto No. 5 in A major together with Piano Concertos KV 40 and KV 449. Piano Concerto No. 3 is an early work, adapted from scores by other composers, while Mozart wrote No. 14 in 1784 at the height of his maturity, as he moved away from functional music to express his ideas in a more dramatic structure. What links the two, according to Swiss-Canadian pianist Gheorghiu, is that they are both “essentially joyful and optimistic concertos in their expression.” According to French violinist David Castro-Balbi, “among Mozart’s violin concertos, No. 5 has the most pronounced operatic character.” The two soloists are accompanied by the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg under the baton of Howard Griffiths.
