An unprecedented experience of freedom On June 6, 2024, the Normandy landings and Monty Alexander will celebrate their 80th anniversary.
A very symbolic historical coincidence that the great musician naturally seizes while also remembering that the name he was given (Montgomery) is a tribute to the famous liberating general.
Recorded mainly at Studio Sextan in October 2023, D-Day brings together the essence of two lengthy sessions. One hears a more introspective Monty Alexander than usual, confident in the time needed to reach the right note, the one that comes only with a sense of assurance.
With the young and brilliant Luke Sellick and Jason Brown, his current rhythm section, he finds partners in harmony with his harmonic and rhythmic digressions, in total fusion, and always pierced by the haunting beat of reggae and the contagious swing.
More than ever, Monty Alexander plays "by ear," spontaneously. And that is indeed the privilege of certain great ears to be able to access total freedom of expression.
