"In the Sign of the Ravens" may not reach the heights of the band's subsequent albums, but it remains highly enjoyable nonetheless. The album offers a raw and cold version of Viking metal, and at that time, the band had not yet fully integrated the more pronounced melodic elements that would become important on their later albums.As mentioned earlier, Mithotyn had already released four demos before this album; about half of the tracks therefore come from these recordings, mainly "Nidhogg" and "Promo 96". The new tracks fit in perfectly, and overall, the album maintains excellent quality.The atmosphere is a strong point of this album. In many ways, the Viking influence is more pronounced here than anywhere else in their discography. It comes through particularly well in instrumental tracks like "Lost in the Mist" and "Let Thy Ale Swing". The band creates a mystical ambiance through folk melodies on the keyboard, layered over distorted guitars, growls, and occasional clean vocals.If you are already a fan of Viking metal or black metal, you will know roughly what to expect: long and varied tracks, harsh guttural vocals balanced by cleaner choruses, and a captivating atmosphere. It is a tried-and-tested formula, but it works wonderfully and perfectly captures the very essence of this musical style.
