In ‘Cublai, gran kan de' Tartari (1788)’, Salieri displays all his heroic-comic flair, Giambattista Casti’s libretto barely concealing, behind its plot set in Cathay north of China, a sharp parody of European monarchical courts. The character of the Great Khan, in particular, is a humorous evocation of Peter the Great. Censored even before its premiere, the work had to wait for this recording to be finally resurrected in its original version with the help of Les Talens Lyriques and their conductor Christophe Rousset, ardent champions of Salieri’s music.
