This complete box set marks a key moment in the celebration of the Miles Davis centennial taking place next year. The recordings capture Miles Davis's Second Great Quintet, composed of Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams, at a pivotal moment. Wayne Shorter had been in the group for just over a year, and the group, which had just recorded E.S.P., was consolidating to become what would become the most innovative small group in jazz. What unfolded on the stage of the Chicago club was not just a performance, but a provocation. Inspired by a pact initiated by drummer Tony Williams to play "anti-music," the group surprised everyone, completely upending their well-rehearsed setlist. As Miles would later say, "We found a way to make the old music as new as the new music we were recording." This is the sound of the Second Great Quintet becoming itself: alive, unstable, and always in flux. Originally released in 1995 as a limited edition LP box set, The Complete Live at the Plugged Nickel has been out of print for nearly three decades. The new edition offers the complete performances, over seven hours of music, in an 8-CD edition. The format includes new liner notes written by Syd Schwartz, which reveal the radical spirit of the performances, as well as classic texts by jazz historian Bob Blumenthal.
