In 1991, the world's most famous trumpeter reflects on five decades of musical evolution—his own, and that of the world around him. Miles Davis had managed to fuse jazz with classical music, and later, with R&B, rock, and funk in hybrid productions that would alter the trajectory of popular music and contribute to his legend. In 1985, he left Columbia after thirty years to sign with Warner Bros. Records, the label that housed internationally successful artists such as Madonna, Van Halen, and Prince, with whom he shared mutual admiration and friendship. Miles Davis's love for France has been widely documented and was crowned with a Legion of Honor awarded in July 1991. Miles Davis received this medal from the hands of Minister of Culture Jack Lang, who called him "the Picasso of jazz." A few days earlier, he had given an electrifying concert at the Jazz à Vienne Festival with the Miles Davis Group. He would pass away two months later, in September 1991. The concert by Miles Davis at Jazz à Vienne on July 1, 1991, is one of his last performances before his death on September 28, 1991, and this previously unreleased recording contains two tracks written by Prince, "Penetration" and "Jailbait." This special edition includes a booklet written by music historian, journalist, and producer Ashley Kahn and was designed by Bruno Tilley.
