There is undoubtedly enough material to fill a library with writings dedicated to Kind of Blue. This album has often been proclaimed "the greatest jazz album of all time." Ultimately, that doesn't mean much, and it adds pressure. Listening to it remains the best thing to do to understand it: what is played on this record, beyond musicological theories and aesthetic revolutions, is a perfect synergy among exceptional musicians. Their names: Bill Evans, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Jimmy Cobb, Paul Chambers, and of course, Miles Davis. The chemistry among them is total. They are all very good, but first and foremost devoted to the ensemble, completely receptive to what is happening around them, almost erased behind their collective creation. A spirit rises in this record, transcending its creators. Perhaps the greatest jazz album of all time.
