There is undoubtedly enough to fill a library with writings dedicated to Kind of Blue. This album has often been proclaimed "the best jazz album of all time." Ultimately, that doesn't mean much, and it puts pressure on it. Listening to it remains the best thing to do to understand it: what is played on this record, beyond musicological theories and aesthetic revolutions, is a perfect osmosis between exceptional musicians. Their names: Bill Evans, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Jimmy Cobb, Paul Chambers, and, of course, Miles Davis. The chemistry between them is total. They are all very good, but first devoted to the whole, absolutely permeable to what is happening around them, as if erased behind their collective creation. A spirit rises in this record, which transcends its authors. Perhaps the best jazz album of all time.
