Davis Miles / Jackson Milt / Quintet / Sextet

Description

Though both were seminal figures in the development of modern jazz and cool jazz (and though they played together extensively at Birdland in the early fifties), Miles Davis and Milt Jackson only recorded together on a rare few occasions. As might be expected, their joint recordings produced splendid music. Originally, their studio work was spread over three different albums. While their 1955 session (included here) was issued in its entirety on the LP Miles Davis All Star Sextet/Quintet, the results of the famous Miles/Milt/Monk encounter were spread over two different albums, one titled Bags’ Groove (containing only the two takes of the title track along with a quintet session with Sonny Rollins recorded on June 29, 1954) and Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants (which contained the rest of the music from that session along with a version of “’Round Midnight” recorded during the same sessions as the music from the famous Cookin’, Relaxin’, Workin’... series featuring John Coltrane). The only other surviving encounter between Miles and Milt took place in Germany during a tour which brought together the members of the Modern Jazz Quartet (including Milt, of course) with Miles and a weakened and ailing Lester Young.
