In the summer of 1948, Miles Davis, in collaboration with arranger Gil Evans, whom he met a few years earlier, decided to realize his project by moving away from the principles of bebop to participate in a new form of jazz. Based in New York, he founded a new group, intermediate between the big band and small bebop ensembles.
Cool jazz was born, but it was not an immediate revolution: the nonet was quickly dissolved, and this new music took several years to establish itself among jazz musicians and the public. On September 18, 1948, the nonet performed for the first time in public, as the opening act for Count Basie's show at the Royal Roost in New York, under the title "Nonet by Miles Davis, arrangement by Gerry Mulligan, Gil Evans and John Lewis."
